Nilita Vachani is a documentary filmmaker, writer and educator.

She divides her time between India and the United States. Her areas of interest are gender, labor and migration. She teaches at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Asian College of Journalism, Chennai.

Nilita Vachani has produced, directed, and edited the acclaimed award-winning documentaries Eyes of Stone, Diamonds in a Vegetable Market, and When Mother Comes Home for Christmas. Her novel Homespun won Foreword’s Choice Fiction Award in 2008, and her long-form journalistic piece Inside Job won the Asia Media Foundation’s Inaugural prize for Investigative Journalism in 2016.
